Battle of the Books
|

Battle of the Books is a program, started by Woozles in 1986, that stimulates reading in the context of friendly competition.

If you've never seen a game, try to come some day. You will feel the excitement and be truly amazed at the phenomenal knowledge and recall of these young readers.

Battle of the Books was created by Woozles to:
- encourage and promote the joy of reading;
- stimulate reading beyond students' individual choices; &
- recognize and reward the value of teamwork and competition.
The competition inherent in the Battle of the Books program takes place in the context of good sportsmanship and mutual respect.

There are two lists of books from which questions are made - one for the Elementary Division and one for the Teen Division. (Books can be easily ordered through Woozles.)

Typically two teams of four students each match wits about the content and authors of books from the lists. For programs held within schools or libraries, teams can be larger to enable more students participate.

Each game consists of 30 questions.

Whens teams are asked a question, the team members have up to two minutes to consult with each other to come up with the correct title which counts for 3 points; only if the title is given correctly, the team has an opportunity to name the author which counts for another 2 points.

Games usually take about 45 minutes to play. Total points earned in the game determine the winner.

By the time the Final games were played on May 3, over 120 participants, from as far away as Riverport and Truro, competed in 35 games and over 1000 questions were asked!

Congratulations to the two Sacred Heart teams who managed to capture the Elementary Dvision title by eeking out a narrow victory over Lemarchant St. Thomas and the Teen Division title in a tense game with Leslie Thomas.

If you've never seen a game, consider joining us - you'll be amazed! Call Woozles for dates and times. If you want to read along, the booklists are available below.

The 2011 Battle of the Books reading lists, registration and order forms are available here in PDF format (see below). If you would like to participate, form a team and register before the end of October, 2010.

As always, the selections for Battle of the Books 2011 are not random. When we choose books for this list, we only select paperbacks (or, occasionally, specially-priced hardcovers) and try to include and balance the following: historical fiction; fantasy; classics and current novels; mysteries; contemporary topic/problem novels; serious and humourous stories; adventure/outdoor/animal novels; award-winning books; and multi-cultural reflections.

We have listed the books in alphabetical order by author and have noted Canadian titles with a Maple Leaf.

Please note there is a block on the back to facilitate early registration of your school's team for Battle of the Books 2011.
